How to Choose the Right Solar Panel for Your Home in 2026: Mono vs Poly vs Bifacial

1. Understand Your Monthly Electricity Consumption

Before purchasing solar panels, check your electricity bill from the last 6 months. Look at the total units (kWh) consumed. In India, a 1 kW solar plant generates an average of 4 to 4.5 units per day under clear sunlight.

  • 1 kW System (2-3 Panels): Generates ~120 to 135 units/month. Perfect for small 1-2 BHK apartments without air conditioning.
  • 3 kW System (6-8 Panels): Generates ~360 to 400 units/month. The most popular size for 3-4 BHK homes running 1-2 ACs and refrigerator.
  • 5 kW System (10-14 Panels): Generates ~600 to 650 units/month. Recommended for large independent houses, duplexes, or homes charging an EV.

2. Monocrystalline vs Polycrystalline vs Bifacial Panels

Understanding panel technology ensures you get maximum power output for your rooftop square footage:

  • Monocrystalline (Mono-PERC): Made from single-crystal silicon with high efficiency (21% - 23%). They perform exceptionally well during cloudy days and high ambient temperatures. Best choice if rooftop area is limited.
  • Polycrystalline: Distinct bluish hue with moderate efficiency (16% - 18%). While slightly cheaper per watt, they need 25% more rooftop space.
  • Bifacial Panels: Generates electricity from both the top and bottom sides by capturing ground reflection (albedo). Ideal for white-tiled, mosaic, or elevated rooftop mounting structures.

3. Rooftop Area Requirements

As a rule of thumb, every 1 kW of solar capacity requires approximately 80 to 100 square feet of shadow-free rooftop area. Ensure the panels face True South with a tilt angle of 20° to 25° depending on your state latitude.

4. Warranty & Certifications to Check

Never compromise on panel certifications. Look for:

  • Product Warranty: 10 to 12 years against manufacturing defects.
  • Linear Performance Warranty: 25 to 30 years ensuring at least 80% output after 25 years.
  • Certifications: BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), IEC 61215, and IEC 61730 compliance.
